Japanese seaweed salads are refreshing in flavor and they go well with various Asian style dishes, and are overall a great way of adding seaweed to your diet. Here is some of my favorite Japanese style seaweed salad recipes that I hope you’ll enjoy.
Wakame & Cucumber Salad – a Japanese Sunomono dish
“Sunomono” (meaning vinegared things in Japanese) generally refers to a variety of side dishes such as salads with seaweed, vegetables and seafood which are seasoned with vinegar based dressings.
To make a simple seaweed cucumber salad you’ll need the following:
- 1 Japanese cucumber (cut into thin slices)
- Roughly 70 g of Wakame seaweed (pre-soaked)
- 1/2 tablespoon salt
- 2 tbsp sugar
- 4 tbsp rice vinegar
- Slice of lemon to decorate
How to prepare: Put cucumber slices in a bowl, sprinkle with salt and leave for 5 min. Then squeeze cucumber slices to remove all juice. Mix vinegar and sugar in a bowl and add cucumber and wakame. Finally, sprinkle with sesame seeds and a bit of chili flakes. Decorate with a slice of lemon if you wish. Serve & enjoy.
Serves 2 – 4 people as a side dish.
There are many varieties of sunomono salad and you can easily add seafood or thin noodles to this salad.
Tuna & Nori seaweed salad
This seaweed salad is super easy. All you need is a few cans of tuna, 1 cucumber, 1 spring onion, nori seaweed and a bit of soy sauce and wasabi and you are good to go.
I actually just made this salad the other day, so here’s a few photos, it’s really yummy on rice cakes:
Method: Add tuna to a bowl and add chopped cucumber and spring onion. Mix well. Cut a few nori sheets into smaller pieces, and add to bowl together with a small amount of soy sauce and wasabi. Stir it all together and it’s ready to serve.
For more flavor, you can also add sesame oil and sesame seeds.
